The town of Mechelen alone is worth visiting, and a walk through the streets, starting from the Grote Markt, or main market square, takes in the historic high points in an hour. To see the sights outside of the town, a bicycle is necessary. On the Steenweg to Leuven (Lièges) is the Domein Planckendael, an ancient castle parkland that has been developed into extensive zoological gardens. Further on is the Liefkens route, which is both cobbled as well as asphalted. The Broek route takes in various natural areas, while the Neteland route, which brings you to Lier, shows you more of this charming provincial town. Even though the coast is far away, there are sand paths and dunes along the Brabant-Kempen route. With the aid of the cycling network map, you yourself can map out several delightful and interesting routes to take.
