Bruges is a place you can wander around for days without getting bored, and home to imposing buildings, countless restaurants and outdoor cafés. The Cycling Network map is your guide to exploring this extravagant corner of Flanders. The charming Brugge three-star hotel, the Maraboe is located on the edge of the old city centre, close to the famous canals and the friendly ‘t Zand district. The city centre is listed as a World Heritage Site and a highly regarded venue in terms of culture and art history. During the 15th century, it was the residence of the Burgundian Royal Family. Surrounding Brugge is a cycling network of 1000 km, provided with countless signposts. Outline your route on the network map and once ‘out in the field’ you’ll find the right way using these signposts. We have set out two routes on paper. One of the routes takes in the poplar-lined waterway to Damme, where Tijl Uilenspiegel is said to have played many of his tricks. The Sint Trudo path is part of the former railway line that used to go in the direction of Gent. This trip has a touch of religion about it, with three abbeys, but the charms of nature are also manifest, and can be admired in the forests of Rijkevelde, for example. Everywhere are outdoor cafés and other eateries, from the humble chipper to high-class establishments. Distance of routes, km 1 Uilenspiegel route 46 2 Abbeys route 32 1 km = 0.62 miles |
