Cycling in the royal garden of France

Thinking about champagne you can already hear the sparkling. Perhaps you never thought of combining a visit to this region with a bike and barge trip but here it is, a bike and barge tour from Paris to Epernay, the true capital of the Champagne region.

You ride out of Paris via the Marne and its parallel, the Marne-Rhine canal. Next is a visit to the rural countryside of the Meaux region, famous for its Brie cheese. From this region known for cheese you ride into the vineyards of the Champagne Region. This is a region fought over heavily in WW1 and you will visit several monuments commemorating the men that fought here over 100 years ago. At the final destination, Epernay you are in the middle of the Champagne industry. A very French tour centered around good wine and good cheese!

Daily Program

  • Tag 1 Saturday: Paris
Cycletours Holidays Barges Clair de Lune on River

Arrival between 12 and 2 p.m. at the mooring place of the Clair de Lune near the Seine river in the center of Paris. In the evening the guide can take you on a guided city walk.

  • Tag 2 Sunday: Paris – Lagny-sur-Marne 31 km

You ride out of Paris via the bike path along the canal de l’Ourcq. This bike path  takes you from the basin of la Vilette to the banks of the l’Ourcq. The canal was built by order of Emperor Napoleon and provided the city with water. It also played an important role in the transportation of goods to and from the city. Later the canal joins the Marne river and on the banks of the Marne you will find your destination of today, Lagny-sur-Marne.

  • Tag 3 Monday: Lagny-sur-Marne – Meaux 45 km

From Lagny-sur-Marne you first ride mainly along the Marne river and its parallel canal. Later on it becomes a bit hilly, as you have to leave the valley of the Marne. At the end of the ride you will again follow the small Canal de l’Ourq and the road will be mostly flat. Today’s destination is the city of Meaux, famous for its “Brie de Meaux” cheeses and the magnificent Cathedral St.-Etienne.

  • Tag 4 Tuesday: Meaux – La Ferté-sous-Jouarre 40 km

In the morning you stay in the valley of the river with a ride through Trilport and Lizy-sur-Ourcq. Later you will have to climb a few challenging hills, leaving the valley in the direction of Jouarre. Jouarre, is a center of Brie making and you will be able to find a place where you can enjoy a tasting of the famous Brie de Meaux and Brie noir cheeses.

  • Tag 5 Wednesday: La Ferté-sous-Jouarre – Château-Thierry 50 km

A somewhat challenging ride today from La-Ferté-sous-Jouarre to Château-Thierry. At first the cycling track leads you along the Marne river. Later you will take a side valley and follow country roads through various small villages. Still riding uphill you finally reach the plateau above the northern part of the Marne valley. This is an area with woods in the valleys and fields with wheat and other crops on the hills. You ride along the little stream Clignon and on the way you can visit the large WW1 American War Cemetery and Monument near Belleau. The destination of today is Château-Thierry. This nice little town was the site of two important battles: the Battle of 1814 in the Napoleonic Wars and the Battle of 1918 at the end of World War I.

  • Tag 6 Thursday: Château-Thierry – Dormans – Epernay 45 km

During breakfast the Clair de Lune sails upstream to Dormans. Here you officially enter the official Champagne area. Dormans is a quiet village on the Marne with a castle and chapel in memory of the battles of the Marne in WW1. A ride up the hill to the village of Châtillon-sur-Marne rewards you with a stunning panorama over the Marne valley and the Champagne vineyards. Further on in the day you will see the Château de Boursault, a large castle built in 1848 by the widow of Mr. Cliquot, who gave her name (“Veuve Cliquot”) to a famous Champagne wine.
Your destination of today is Epernay, with Reims the major wine center of the Champagne region. Epernay has many town houses in neo-renaissance style or classical style dating from the 19th century, especially around the beautiful Avenue the Champagne where prestigious champagne houses, such as Moët & Chandon and Mercier, are situated.

  • Tag 7 Friday: Epernay, roundtrip 25 km

On this last cycling day we have not made it too hard for you in distance At first you ride along the quiet canal parallel to the Marne river to Ay and Mareuil-sur-Ay. After that you ride via the village of Dizy to reach Hautvillers. A bit of a challenging ascent brings you to this picturesque village. Hautvilliers on the southern slopes of the Montagne de Reims is the place where champagne was in fact invented. You will visit the chapel with the tomb of the monk Dom Pérignon (1638-1715). Dom Pérignon pioneered several techniques, and was the first to blend grapes to improve wines and make them of a better quality. Double fermentation, characteristic for the making of champagne, was introduced also by him. Upon your return you can take your time to visit the center of Epernay. Why not enjoy a Champagne tasting and take a tour in one of the major Champagne houses.

  • Tag 8 Saturday: Epernay

End of the tour after breakfast, before 10 AM.

In the pleasant atmosphere on board you can have a chat, go through the day with the others, and enjoy the meals prepared specially for cyclists. Yes, this must be notified when booking, but no later than 14 days before arrival. Diets which need a special preparation or special ingredients can only be offered in limited form. The main countries represented by our cycling guests are: United States and Canada. We also receive guests from United Kingdom, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia and New Zealand. The common language on board is English.

  • Can I rejoin the barge before the end of a stage

No, the barge doesn’t take the same route as the cyclists do. Sometimes the route may be altered because of weather conditions or repairs to bridges or locks and then the guests and the guide can arrange with the skipper to be met at a different place. Naturally you can always stay on board for one or more days.

  • What is the average age of the participants

The average age varies between 50 and 80, but of course we have younger and older guests. In particular it is quite possible during the school holidays that children might be booked on your tour.
